Natural cosmetics – what sets them apart?
In a market where many cosmetic products contain a high number of synthetic ingredients, finding a balm or cream with a natural composition can be challenging. The desire to return to nature is pushing us to look for more and more products with simple, gentle and transparent formulas.
Why is it worth choosing cosmetic products with natural ingredients for face and body?
When choosing a product with ingredients of natural or organic origin, it is important to know that the terms “natural”, “bio” or “eco” in the name or on the packaging do not necessarily guarantee such a formula. For this reason, always check the ingredient list and the information provided by the manufacturer.
The ISO 16128 standard provides guidelines for defining and assessing ingredients of natural and organic origin in cosmetic products. In developing Mokosh formulas, the principles of the COSMOS standard, which sets criteria for natural and organic cosmetics, were also used as a reference.
In general, when assessing a natural cosmetic product, the following are taken into account:
- the origin and percentage of natural ingredients in the formula;
- the use of recyclable and more environmentally friendly packaging;
- a production process that aims to reduce energy consumption, waste and wastewater;
- the controlled use of permitted preservatives, such as benzoic acid, sorbic acid, benzyl alcohol and dehydroacetic acid;
- the use of antioxidant ingredients, such as vitamin E, where appropriate for the formula.
If you want a product that is natural not only in name, check the composition, claims and relevant certifications before buying. Products with selected ingredients and more careful production processes may cost more, but price should not be the only criterion for assessing quality.
The INCI list helps you understand which ingredients a product contains. Reading it may seem complicated at first, but once you know the most commonly used ingredients it becomes easier to tell which formulas suit your skin's needs.
Which ingredients are usually avoided in natural cosmetics?
Natural face and body cosmetics are distinguished by formulas created with carefully selected ingredients. The Mokosh range includes gentle washes, creams, balms, scrubs and oils adapted to different skin needs.
Depending on the relevant standard or certification, natural formulas usually avoid or limit:
- ingredients and finished products tested on animals;
- nanomaterials that are not permitted by the relevant standard;
- certain petroleum derivatives, such as petrolatum and paraffin;
- PEG-type emulsifiers;
- certain synthetic preservatives, such as parabens and formaldehyde;
- harsh synthetic detergents, such as SLS and SLES.
Packaging matters too. Recyclable materials are preferred, while certain materials, such as PVC and polystyrene, are restricted by some certification standards.
Mokosh natural cosmetics are distinguished by:
- paraben-free formulas;
- carefully selected ingredients of natural origin;
- transparent formulas, with a full list of ingredients;
- a careful approach to the skin and the environment.
